Wearing a crown is normally a sign of great honour and prestige – unless it's a crown of thorns, of course. This phrase is normally used to talk about someone who has inherited undeserved suffering and shame.

When Jesus was arrested and put on trial, one of the charges against him was that he claimed to be the king of the Jewish people. The Roman governor who tried him, Pontius Pilate, had him crowned with thorns as a sick joke...

The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. And they began to call out to him, "Hail, king of the Jews!"
